Presentation
October 17 uprising marks the beginning of a process of a real decline of political sectarianism. The scale of this uprising and its cross-sectarian, cross-generational, cross-gender and cross-geographical characteristics is unique in the modern history of Lebanon. The question that this talk is addressing is this: why is this happening on the eve of the centennial anniversary of the creation of Grand Liban? What are the historical and political reasons for the bottom-up process of undermining “political sectarianism”? Lastly, what could be done to ensure the translation of this uprising into a change of the political system in Lebanon whereby politics, political institutions and political identities become secular and civic?
