Has the “Deal of the century” Killed Oslo—Or Rescued It?
Présentation
The 181-page long “Peace to Prosperity” plan, aka the Deal of the Century, was finally released in late January 2020, three years after Donald Trump announced his intention to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Its presentation at the White House with Benjamin Netanyahu left very few doubts over the alignment of the American proposal with the Israeli government’s aspirations.
In some respects, the Plan’s proposals—not to mention its very existence—appear to contradict the very basis of the Oslo Agreements signed in 1993. This presentation assumes that the Deal does not in fact contradict the fundamental principles of the Peace Process started in 1993 —namely, protecting the ongoing process of colonization, and limiting the Palestinian exercise of sovereignty. Questions also remain concerning the Plan’s application, that do not help any of the parties to square the circle inherent in the Oslo Agreements: what is left for the Palestinians?
