Résumé
La première colonie romaine de la province de Syrie a été déduite à l’emplacement de la cité phénicienne de Béryte (Beyrouth) au début du principat d’Auguste. Peuplée de vétérans issus de deux légions, elle s’est vue dotée d’un très vaste territoire, étendu en l’an 15 av. J.‑C. dans la plaine de la Békaa jusqu’au sanctuaire d’Héliopolis (Baalbek) et aux sources de l’Oronte. Le tome VIII/1 des Inscriptions grecques et latines de la Syrie (IGLS) apporte des informations irremplaçables sur l’histoire de la ville entre ce moment fondateur et le règne de l’empereur Justinien (527-565). Il réunit 464 inscriptions provenant de la capitale du Liban actuel et d’une vingtaine de sites ruraux répartis sur la côte méditerranéenne et sur le versant maritime du Mont Liban, y compris Deir el‑Qalaa. La documentation des trois premiers siècles de l’ère chrétienne caractérise la colonia Iulia Augusta Felix Berytus comme une petite Rome en Phénicie. Celle des quatre siècles suivants correspond à un nouvel âge d’or au cours duquel la cité, désormais acquise au christianisme, s’est affirmée en tant que véritable patrie des lois romaines et siège d’une École de droit fameuse, dont la prospérité fut brutalement compromise par le séisme dévastateur de 551 apr. J.-C.
Abstract
The first Roman colony in the province of Syria was established on the site of the Phoenician city of Berytus (Beirut) at the beginning of Augustus’ principate. Popu-lated by veterans of two legions, it was endowed with a very vast territory, which was extended in 15 BC in the Bekaa plain up to the sanctuary of Heliopolis (Baalbek) and the sources of the Orontes. Volume VIII/1 of the Inscriptions grecques et latines de la Syrie (IGLS) provides irreplaceable information on the history of the city between this founding moment and the reign of Emperor Justinian (527-565). It brings together 464 inscriptions from the capital of present-day Lebanon and some twenty rural sites spread along the Mediterranean coast and on the maritime side of Mount Lebanon, including Dayr al-Qalaa. The documentation of the first three centuries of the Christian era characterises the colonia Iulia Augusta Felix Berytus as a little Rome in Phoenicia. The documentation of the following four centuries corresponds to a new golden age in which the city, now converted to Christianity, asserted itself as the true home of Roman law and the seat of a famous law school, whose prosperity was brutally compromised by the devastating earthquake of 551 AD.

يعود تأسيس أول مستعمرة رومانية في المقاطعة الرومانية السورية في موقع المدينة الفينيقية بيريتوس (بيروت) إلى بداية عهد أغسطس. وقد سكن من محاربي فيلقين من فيالق الجيش الروماني، ومُنحوا أراضي شاسعة للغاية، امتدت عام ١٥ قبل الميلاد من سهل البقاع إلى معبد هليوبوليس (بعلبك) ومنابع نهر العاصي. يقدم المجلد ٨/١ من نقوش سوريا اليونانية واللاتينية (IGLS) معلومات لا غِنى عنها عن تاريخ المدينة بين هذه اللحظة التأسيسية وعهد الإمبراطور جستنيان (٥٢٧-٥٦٥). فيضم ٤٦٤ نقشاً من عاصمة لبنان الحالي، دير القلعة وحوالي عشرين موقعًا ريفيًا منتشرة على ساحل البحر الأبيض المتوسط وعلى المنحدر البحري لجبل لبنان. وتكشف وثائقُ القرون الثلاثة الأولى للعصر الميلادي عن كون مستعمرة ”يوليا أغسطا فيليكس بيريتوس“ (colonia Iulia Augusta Felix Berytus) خلال هذه الحقبة التاريخية بمثابة روما مُصغرة في فينيقيا. ويشهد توثيق القرون الأربعة التالية على العصر الذهبي للمدينة، التي أصبحت مسيحية، وأثبتت نفسها موطنًا حقيقيًا للقوانين الرومانية، ومقرًا لمدرسة القانون الشهيرة، ولكن الزلازلُ الذي دمرها في عام ٥٥١ للميلاد أنهى ازدهار المدينة
