Report on the international workshop Non-Muslim contributions to Islamic civilization, February 14, Amman
Wednesday, February 14, in Amman, the Royal Institute for Interfaith Studies (RIIFS) and the French Institute for the Near East (Ifpo) represented by Mehdi Berriah, in collaboration with the French Embassy in Amman, hosted a seminar entitled “Non-Muslim contributions to Islamic civilization”. This seminar has been organized by Renee Hattar (RIIFS) and Mehdi Berriah (IFPO)
Several researchers and academics attended the conference, including historians, philosophers, and Islamic studies specialists from various universities and nations. They discussed 12 research papers related to the conference’s topic, Jordan News Agency, Petra reported.
The papers included issues that highlighted the contributions of non-Muslims to Islamic civilization, recognizing that the history of Islamic civilization is not restricted to Muslims’ intellectual achievements. Islamic civilization and culture are viewed as the outcome of extensive processes of interchange in which non-Muslims played a vital part in a variety of sectors and significantly contributed to their advancement.
The studies also discussed non-Muslim contributions to several cognitive disciplines such as thought, culture, science, medicine, beliefs, philosophy, art, and law.
The conference emphasized the importance of focusing on manuscript research and teaching university researchers to engage in this rich subject through collaborations with universities and research institutions that specialize in this topic. It also advocated that non-Muslim contributions to Islamic civilization be included in school curriculums to enhance awareness of this topic among young people, thus promoting citizenship, pluralism, and acceptance of others.
The conference also called for the continuation of organizing such intellectual gatherings and cooperation with a larger number of researchers and universities from outside Jordan.
