Doctoral scholarship in Amman (Jordan)
As part of the research projec t “Historicity of democracy in the Arab world ” (HISDEMAB) coordinated by Dr. habil. Nor a Lafi and based at Leibniz-Zentrum Moderne r Orien t (ZMO) in Berlin (Germany ), which brings togethe r German, French, Jordanian and Tunisian research teams financed by the Leibn iz Collabo-rative Excellence initiative, a doctor al scholarship position is now available for the Jordan-based project team a t IFPO Amman . Candidates must be enrolled in doctor al studies at a University in Jordan or enro l at the beginning of the scholarship and will devote their research to a local or region al aspe ct of the re-search programme. The successful candidate will benef it from research stays in Berlin, which will be fi-nanced by the HISDEMAB programme. They will actively participate in the collective activities of the sci-entific network (intern al meetings, colloquia, seminars, publications).
The profile sought is tha t of a doctor al studen t at the star t of his/he r dissertation, working on the theme of the historicity of democracy in the Middle East from a historical, sociological, anthropological or politi-cal science perspective. Particu lar attention will be paid to applications showing a good knowledge of the local and internation al bibliography on the subject, related to an original field of research and articu-lating in an innovative way problematized questions and reflections contributing to collective research. The general aim of the programme is t o reinterpre t local deliberative practices in the Arab world which can constitute the historical matrices of a vision of democracy, and to examine their transformation dur-ing the various phases of Ottoman, colonial, nation al and contemporary history . Attention will also be devoted to studying the impact of local deliberative practices on the global ideologies tha t have trans-formed, reinterpreted or challenged them.
Excellent language skills in Arabic and English are required. Knowledge of German or French is valued. The scholarship runs from 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2023, subject to review and confirmation. The scholar-ship includes health insurance. Additional funds for research travel and publications are available.
