Abstract
Until the beginning of the 18th century Al Salt was a small village with no more than 400 inhabitants, mostly farmers. This presentation will present the evolution of the city since this period with a focus on its social history (migration, economic activities), urbanism and urban heritage. The presentation will also focus on the political and strategical role of Al Salt during the last three centuries at a local and a regional scale.

Dr. Raouf Abu Jaber
About the speaker
Dr. Raouf Abu Jaber is a renowned Jordanian historian and businessman. Born in Al Salt in 1925 to a prominent local family, he has a long and distinguished career of professional, community and educational service. His doctorate, from the University Oxford, is published as Pioneers Over Jordan: The Frontiers of Settlement in Transjordan, 1850-1914 (1989) and draws extensively on family papers, as well as British, Jordanian, Ottoman and French sources. He has published to date over one hundred articles and five books in English and eleven in Arabic.
